In 1985, Rupert Neve designed a mic preamp for Sir George Martin. That circuit became the foundation for every ISA product made ever since. From the Forte console to today’s standalone preamps and the ISA C8X audio interface, the same Lundahl LL1538 transformer and design philosophy runs through it all.
1985
The first request
Sir George Martin commissioned Rupert Neve to build a no-compromise mic preamp. The result, the Input Signal Amplifier 110, which set a new benchmark for warmth and musicality.
1988
The Focusrite Forte Console
Designed to be the ultimate studio console, the Forte used the finest components and became a symbol of engineering excellence.
1990
The Focusrite Studio Console
After acquiring Focusrite, Phil Dudderidge built the ISA 110 and 130 modules into the Focusrite Studio Console — acclaimed to this day for its warmth and depth. Only ten were made.
Present
ISA today
What began as a console is now a range of standalone preamps and the ISA C8X audio interface. The same transformers and design, evolved for how studios work today.
The Lundahl LL1538
The same Lundahl LL1538 chosen by Rupert Neve in 1985 sits at the heart of every ISA preamp, bringing warm, open, and detailed character to any signal.
From the ISA 110 in 1985 to the Forte console, the Focusrite Studio Console, and the standalone preamps trusted in professional studios today: 40 years of engineering, captured in one documentary.
“One of the most versatile preamps on the market. I carry it for mobile sessions and residencies — the perfect pairing for any producer wanting to expand their setup.”
“Everything sounds like the best version of itself. I love the switchable input impedances with my synths, and there's a subtle low-mid curve that just sounds great.”
“The ISA sits in a really nice space between 'clean' and 'colourful' — high enough specification for when fidelity matters, yet never cold or clinical.”
BBC, English National Opera, National Theatre Live
“The ISA sits somewhere between clean and colourful — a slightly larger-than-life quality that carries real gravitas. It consistently proves popular with voiceover artists.”
